SGML's \verbatim is called a CDATA marked section, just as you used above.
since "verbatim" is conceptually very different from all other markup
constructs, it is a very different markup construct in SGML.
note: do not use the CDATA declared content for elements. it is broken in
the standard. (the element is specified to be terminated by anything that
looks like an end-tag, not just by the end-tag for the CDATA element.) if
the CDATA declared content had been done right, it could have been called
"verbatim" and worked as expected.
