The Department of Computer and Humanities at Utrecht University has
recently initiated a project to publish a number of 16th and early 17th-
century music treatises in Italian on CD-ROM. This project is called
_Thesaurus Musicarum Italicarum_ (TMI), after the well-known database
of Latin music treatises, the _Thesaurus Musicarum Latinarum_ (TML).
Rather than the encoding the sources in plain ASCII, TMI follows the
guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), an application of the
Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) specifically designed for
historical documents and literary works. A CD-ROM of Zarlino's
_Istitutioni harmoniche_ (1558, 1589) is now being prepared as a pilot
The project now has its own WWW-site at:
It can also be reached through the department's home page:
then choose "Thesaurus Musicarum Italicarum project".
It contains links to SGML and TEI sites, and to a number of TEI or
HTML-encoded demonstration materials (mainly part 4, 'On the modes',
of the 1558 edition of the _Istitutioni harmoniche_). At this stage,
knowledge of SGML is necessary to use some of these materials. An SGML
viewer will be provided with the final product.
Persons or institutions interested in ordering the Zarlino CD-ROM should
send a request to the project coordinator. They will receive ordering
information towards the end of 1996. The project coordinator welcomes
all further questions, comments and suggestions. In particular, people
who have entered music treatises in any European language other than
Latin into the computer and are willing to distribute these, are
invited to react.
This message is posted to a number of discussion groups. My apologies
