I did put a pointer to more information about TIPSTER itself in one
of my earlier messages:
Basically you can think of the TIPSTER architecture as offering an
alternative to SGML (if I may utter such heresy on this list! ;-)
It does things in completely the opposite way to SGML, in that the
annotations are kept separate from the text, in a file-based database.
Tags are marked by byte-offsets from the start of the source file.
Part of the work underway at Sheffield (UK) in a "General
architecture for Text Engineering" (GATE), cf
is aimed at bridging the gap between the TIPSTER model (which has the
advantage of being a US-Government-sponsored spec) and SGML (which I
guess is too?! :-) ... cf
I'm not sure, however, if a default tagset has yet been specified for
TIPSTER (tags used thus far -- if I understand corrextly -- have been
created for the MUC and TREC tasks), so I was wondering if anyone
else might be interested in a TIPSTER "implementation" of TEI...?
