Radiology Cases In Pediatric Emergency Medicine is a free software program
available on the internet and via the U.S. mail. Each volume contains 20
cases with their associated radiographs (65 to 130 radiographic images per
volume). Teaching and discussion sections follow. Good for teaching
medical students, residents, for CME, and as a valuable desktop resource.
Requires Microsoft Windows and a 256 color driver. Five volumes are
currently available. Volume 1 was reviewed by Medical Software Reviews
(6/95 issue), which awarded Radiology Cases In Pediatric Emergency
Medicine its highest ratings in all categories. Radiology Cases In
Pediatric Emergency Medicine (volumes 1, 2, 3, 4) was awarded the 1996
Professional Medical Education Award by the American Academy of
Pediatrics. Users are encouraged to copy the program disks and distribute
them to others. There are no charges or fees to download this program.
It is truly freeware. You may obtain a copy by one of the following
World Wide Web: Direct your web browser by entering the following URL:
You can view Radiology Cases In Pediatric Emergency Medicine on line (Mac
users included). However, the local version run on your PC is much
faster, the image quality is better, and there are more options to enlarge
and seletively view the radiographic images. Click on the Radiology Cases
In Pediatric Emergency Medicine choice. Download each volume by clicking
on the download option. You must know how to use ZIP files. Download
times are 15 to 30 minutes per volume. This Web server is very busy. It
is best to try in the early morning (while most of us in Hawaii are still
sleeping because of the time zone difference).
FTP: Download the files xr1.zip, xr2.zip, xr3.zip, xr4.zip and xr5.zip
(vols. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) via anonymous FTP from the "outgoing" subdirectory
Enter "anonymous" to login, then enter your e-mail address as a password.
Change to the "outgoing" subdirectory. Indicate that the file transfer
will be "binary". Download the files above. You must know how to use ZIP
files. Nearly all internet services (Compuserve, Prodigy, America Online,
Netcom, etc.) have FTP access but the FTP commands may differ slightly.
Your internet service should provide you with easy instructions on how to
use FTP. Download times are 15 to 30 minutes per volume. This FTP server
is very busy. It is best to try in the early morning (while most of us in

Compuserve: Download the files xr1.zip, xr2.zip, xr3.zip, xr4.zip and
xr5.zip (vols. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) from the "Informatics" section library of
the AMIA forum (GO AMIA). You must know how to use ZIP files. Download

E-mail: Send an e-mail message to me at: [log in to unmask]
Indicate which volume(s) you would like. I will return the software in
ZIP files to your E-mail account. You must know how to use ZIP files.
Warning: Each volume is about 2 megabytes. Your E-mail service may not
allow such a large E-mail or they may charge you additional fees. I have
also had difficulty with America Online and Prodigy E-mail. If you have
an alternate E-mail address, please use your alternate E-mail address for
this method if possible. Nearly all internet and e-mail services have FTP
and WWW access. Using FTP or WWW is more reliable than this E-mail
method. Download times are 15 to 30 minutes per volume.
U.S. Mail: Send eleven IBM-type formatted blank 3.5 inch high density
floppy disks and a self addressed stamped disk mailer to me ($3 postage in
a bubble pack 6" by 9" envelope or larger). Alternatively, send a check
for $10 (U.S.A. addresses) or $15 (U.S.) for foreign addresses, made out
to Loren Yamamoto, to cover the cost of the disks, mailer, and return
postage. I will make a copy of the program disks for you (ready to run)
and return it to you via the U.S. mail.
CD-ROM Version (available early 12/96): This one disk contains all five
volumes. This version does not utilize image compression, therefore the
images are of superior quality. Request this CD-ROM by sending a check
for $12 (U.S.A addresses) or $16 (U.S.) for foreign addresses, made out to
Kapiolani Medical Center to cover the cost of the CD-ROM, mailer, and
postage. Send your request to the address below.
Hope you find these cases interesting and challenging. Sincerely,
Loren Yamamoto, MD, MPH
