REQUEST FOR SOFTWARE ADVICE FOR TEACHING APPLIED
My colleague, Gary Stringer, and I will be giving some
sessions on corpus linguistics and text encoding for the
Applied Linguistics MA here at Exeter. We will be
talking specifically about the BNC, SGML and the TEI
Guidelines. We have the opportunity to give a
hands-on session with the students and we would like them
to do some text encoding, parsing and retrieval themselves.
Does anybody have a similar experience of teaching
linguistics students? What software would you recommend
that is a) basic, b) cheap or free and c)can run on PCs on
a Novell network?
