Assocate Professor of Pediatrics
There has been some mis-information posted recently regarding training
options and ability to become certified in Ped Emergency Medicine.
Specifically, it has been stated that if you complete a Pediatric residency
and an EM residency OR you complete a five year combined Ped/EM residency,
then you will be eligible for subspecialty certification in PEM. On the
contrary, this pathway closes very soon. Per the American Board of Pediatrics,
"A candidate who has completed training to meet the certification requirements
of ABP and ABEM before January 1, 1999, may apply via this pathway."
The bottom line is this pathway closes in 1 1/2 years. You can still be a
very well trained clinician with a broad range of jobs but you will not be
able to sit for the sub-boards in PEM unless all training is completed by Jan
Ronald I. Paul, M.D.
