Subject: IO glucose question
Regarding the question from Eric, the EMT-I student, regarding whether
D50 can be given IO. The best answer is that anything that can be
given IV, can be given by the intraosseous route. As IO will most
likely be needed in smaller kids, ie. infants, consideration for D10
or D25 should be age related and not route of administration.
Concern for hypertonic fluids given IO relate to study in the 1940's
(Heinilid et al) which showed an increased risk of osteomyelitis.
This study was flawed and more contemporary study has not raised this
association. The primary risk of late regarding the use of
hypertonic materials would be their risk of local infiltration, just
as they would be if an IV infiltrated.
