I am a Paramedic in Virginia Beach,VA. I recently was called to a residence to
transport a 3 month old to a local hospital. The child had been diagnosed woth
Croup about 9 hrs earlier out of state and became worse, so mom called 911.
Upon arrival we found the child with classic signs and symptoms of Croup (
i.e. Seal Like Cough, Obvious Accesory Muscle use) I contacted Online Medical
Control and the telemerty physician ordered me to give 0.3cc of 1:1000 Epi
with 3cc Normal Saline Solution via Hand Held Nebulizer. This order was
unusual but l did comply. Upon arrival at the hospital i asked the doctor
about the order and he said that their was a study done showing that standard
epi worked as well as Racemic Epi (the drug of chioce in Croup). And is
cheaper to produce.
I was wondering where i would be able to find copies of this study and when,
and where it was done so i can present the concept to my OMD.
Any information will be greatly appreciated
