Some good news for a change....
HCFA has agreed to indefinitely delay the implementation of the 1997 E&M
documentation guidelines, and will be considering a significantly revised
set, which is under development by the AMA. A rough draft of these
guidelines were presented for discussion at an AMA sponsored "fly=in" in
Chicago on 4/27, which was attended by most professional societies and state
medical associations. The new rules will be much simpler than the 97 rules,
and will be pilot tested prior to their implementation, which is not likely
to occur earlier than Jan 1999.
At the upcoming AMA CPT meeting in May, the current draft, along with the
many comments made by the 4/27 attendees will be considered. The AMA should
be releasing a second draft for broad review by specialty societies and
individuals (on their web site) after the May meeting. They hope to
finalize a draft for pilot testing at the September CPT meeting. The AMA is
looking for broad input, including strangely enough, from pediatric care
providers, and a broad pilot testing process.
In the meantime, one can use either the 1994 rules or the new 1997 rules (if
you have already made the change).
Look for further news either through the AAP or ACEP.....
