It is unfortunate for all of us that we buy new textbooks that are general
2-4 years out of date at time of publication and are these books are very
The bood news is that Dr. Jon Adler and I came up with a solution for this
problem. We developed the software to allow thousands of physicians to
write textbooks online that can be updated 24 hours a day, allow unlimited
pictures, audio, and video. Best of all we have made them free to the
world. Over the last year 400 academic emergency physicians completed a
660 topic emergency medicine textbook that is over 8,000 pages long and
includes thousands of pictures. We have provided a similar opportunity for
pediatricians to write a 2,800 topic book for your clinical practice.
The bad news is that you don't seem interested. We have sent flyers to
every pediatric training program in the U.S. and only 200 authors or so
have signed up. This is in contrast to EM where we had 300 authors and
editors sign up in less that 2 weeks from sending just one email to our
academic online discussion group.
We are not making a profit on this project. Is actually cost us over
$100,000 to develop the software and we did get 2 grants from drug
companies to defray some of the cost of editing the EM text. We have
similar grants to support the cost of editing your text but they will
disappear if we don't get authors. We cannot afford to many more mailings.
The question is, can pediatricians all work together to provide free
textbooks for us all to use?
I hope that each of you will see the merit of this project and rise to the
occassion. Please contact all pediatricians, fellows, and senior residents
and let them know about this project. Sign up occurs at www.emedicine.com
