I have been doing and supervising LP's since 1970 (wow, how time goes fast).
I have yet to see a child paralyzed from an LP.
The risk of herniation is real but the cause and effect and questionable (as
discussed here previously)
We have gone through a period of 'no additional consent' to 'additional
consent' based on hospital attorney demand.
I think that giving a parent a written explanation about what is an LP (in
plain English and in other languages is a very smart idea.
It addresses the need to communicate to the patient (and family) what is
going on and what is about to happen, something we should be doing regardless
of the legal implications.
