It has been our experience in infants and children to use the short acting
barbiturate pentobarbital. The dose we use is 3 to 5 mg/kg, and give the
drug either po, pr or iv. I t onset of action is quick 5 to 10 minutes and it
duration short ( usually awake and feeding in 45 to 60 minutes. We have
had very few failures to sedate and no adverse consequence as a result
of the sedation.
The advantage in those children that do not have an IV is that there is no
pain associated with the administration of the medication!!!!
