The Perseus Project is digitizing more reference works of an encylopedic
nature. That is to say, works arranged alphabetically by headword,
sometimes with homonymns, sometimes with linguistic information about
the headword, but almost always with a relatively free-form article
about the headword. Cross-reference entries are also common. Since it
seems hard to draw a formal distinction between encyclopedias and
dictionaries, it would seem logical to use the TEI dictionary tagset to
encode encyclopedias. This tagset, however, is not set up to contain
discursive text, i.e. no <p>s allowed, and I am contemplating a superset
TEI modification to allow <p>s, <bylines>s and a few others in <def>.
Does anyone else have experience or thoughts on encyclopedias? Would you
simply suggest <div1 type="entry"><head>Headword</head>... ?
Although I vaguely think a similar problem must have come up before, a
search of the list archives doesn't turn up anything.
