We call positive findings to our patients [and in the Peds ED, parents] that
require a change in plan of care. We document the call on a 2-ply NCR follow
up form. One copy stays in the department and the other goes to Medical
Records. We do not call back positive findings [say a viral pneumonia] that
does not warrant a change in treatment or follow up plan. I wish we would.
In many cases, the physician the patient is referred to, tells the parent or
patient the finding. The parent or patient naturally feels that we must have
"missed" the diagnosis because that information was not shared with them at
the visit or within a reasonable follow up time frame.
