We did some workshops during my fellowship where we taught local MD's to
use numby. I had it done on myself and actually found the sensation to be
unpleasant, sort of like a painful pins and needles. This decreases over
time as the area becomes numb. From my own experience I would anticipate
younger children would find this unpleasant.
I have also had residents practice IV's on me using buffered lidocaine
delivered with a 30 guage needle. This is virtually painless. Of course
its hard to convicnce a 3 year old of this when you approach him with the
30 guage needle.
