Popular knowledge, I don't know. I do know that you can find fossils along the south coast of England just by walking along the bottom of cliffs and checking to see what has been eroded out in the last storm or two - mostly ammonites and trilobites, but the occasional bone, sharktooth, etc. There must be some reason for the widespread appearance of winged serpents across continents - and I prefer the fossil explanation rather than the more "Fortean" cryptozoological explanation.
