In the U.S., women are far less likely to use a M.I., though it is
certainly not unknown.  My father was Thomas A. Cowan for all formal
purposes; my mother was Marianne Cowan; I am John Cowan most of
the time, John W. Cowan on my credit cards, John Woldemar
Cowan on my book.  And one company knows me as John L. Cowan,
apparently having got my wife's M.I. mixed in to my name.
