<< I know the Assimil series (being French myself :)) ). I've looked
at them in
different bookstores, but never bought any of them (they're much too
expensive
for me, they are usually twice as expensive as other language books).
They do
look better than any other methods I've seen. They are usually big
books, with
at least 100 lessons in each.

That's true, but when you really want to learn a language, you should
be prepared to invest time and as much money as required in it :P

Sounds like a good series. I would invest in it if I spoke french
and/or lived in France :)

Though the book I learnt Italian from (people always look at me funny
when I tell them I *learnt* it from a book), the "Wiley Self-Teaching
Guide" by E. Lebano, focused very highly on grammar, which I highly
enjoyed, and not much on culture, which could have improved the book
significantly...
