When I was working on Korean with my Korean teaching assistant in Korea, those
double consonants (especially initial ss) were the one thing I really could
not distinguish accurately in speaking or listening. I would listen to my
Korean assistant say a word beginning with ss, and I would try to repeat it, and
sometimes he would say "that's right" and other times he would say "that's
wrong" and in 2 years of trying I never learned to
recognize it reliably.
