After sending the above, I remember a tanka (uta) by the translator of 
the novel, MIYAMOTO Masao, apparently inspired by his translation of the 
story, which I first read in the early sixties and liked very much. For 
those who can read it, here it is:

Sur blanka duno
sub la printempa suno
min logis reve
Lob-nor kaj Loŭlan ŝvebe.
Ho, romantik' de l' juno!

Lob-nor was the drying-up dragon lake alongside which the city of Loulan 
was built. This tanka is part of a much longer poem "La rememoro jam fora".
