Not *using*. They were just using it as an analogy, AFAICT.

It seems to me to be a spinoff of the old philosophical language idea
of just giving an incrementing number for each 'word' in the langauge,
thus resulting in a string of numbers which is supposedly universal
and language neutral (post massage for grammatical marking).
