In Icelandic the users prefered creating calques, as the morphologic
system of Icelandic with a lot of umlauts and ablauts is said to have
difficulties in handling vast loans from other languages. On the other
hand I read somewhere that in the period just before the modern stage of
the language, it had imported a lot from Danish and other languages, and
there was a feeling that one wanted to free the language of those imports.
