I fear that many users will have adopted a pragmatic solution
based on filenaming, some what like what you do here. so

 surface 
	  lowres/pic1.jpg
	  hires/pic1.jpg
	  xray/pic1.jpg
          18thcopy/pic1.jpg

which of course is useable, in a one-off situation.

abuse-minded people probably use @rend on <graphic> :-}
