Hmmm... Wiktionary shows another explanation:

dal latino volgare dŏmna che deriva dal latino dŏmĭna ossia "signora, padrona" della domus, ovvero della "casa"

When you say "another explanation" it sounds to me as if you are saying that 'donna' is not the feminine of 'don'.  But 'don' also is derived from the Latin 'dominus'.  Therefore 'donna' is, indeed, the feminine of 'don'.
