My undergraduate English Lit students... about 40 in 2 semesters, encoding and marking up 43 chapters of Victorian fiction ... have also learned angle brackets in one day, as well as things like – versus — . It's vocab, and they have been doing vocab since elementary school. Having them handwrite a "vocab list" of code seems to root in in their minds. Or maybe it's Elisa's pedagogy, as I learned coding in her workshop.
