I practice in a childrern's hospital in Memphis Tn and here we handle
ingested objects as follows:
 
Coins, esophageal above the middle esoph.....blind bougeniage by
surgery
Coins- below middle third of esophagus... give ice chips or water and
follow for up to 24 hours. They usually pass into the stomach and
thence traverse the intestinal tract ...
 
Sharp objects like safety pins, Esophageal.....retrieved by endoscopy
 
Sharp objects...gastric.....observed unless symptoms of Bowel
obstruction or perforation occurs.
 
Button batteries......esophageal------retrieved
                              gastric------------followed and observed
