Hi;

   I am attempting to encode some verb conjugations using the TEI DTD
for SGML. In my searches through chapter 12 of the TEI guidelines, I
found no way to specify a stem for a verb. I wish to be able to
specify the verb stem and reference it in <ovar> fashion. A rough
example of what I envision follows:

________________________________________________________________________
                                CRIER
                                to shout

PRESENT

je crie
tu cries
il crie
nous crions
vous criez
ils crient

      <entry>
        <form>
          <orth stem="cri">crier</orth>
          <form type="infl">
            <tns>pres</tns>
            <form>
              <orth><svar>e</orth>
              <per>1</per>
              <number>sing</number>
            </form>
            <form>
              <orth><svar>es</orth>
              <per>2</per>
              <number>sing</number>
            </form>
            <form>
              <orth><svar>e</orth>
              <per>3</per>
              <number>sing</number>
            </form>
            <form>
              <orth><svar>ons</orth>
              <per>1?</per>
              <number>pl</number>
            </form>
            <form>
              <orth><svar>ez</orth>
              <per>2</per>
              <number>1?</number>
            </form>
            <form>
              <orth><svar>ent</orth>
              <per>3</per>
              <number>pl</number>
            </form>
          </form>
        </form>
          ...
      </entry>

Perhaps the specification of multiple stems would be appropriate in
the cases where the stem varies drastically in a small number of ways.
To support multiple stems, it seems that a new tag might be in order:

________________________________________________________________________
      <entry>
        <form>
          <orth>croitre</orth>
          <stem id=1>cro</stem>
          <stem id=2>cr&ucirc.</stem>
          <form type="infl">
            <tns>pres</tns>
            <form>
              <orth><svar id=1>&icirc.s</orth>
              <per>1</per>
              <number>sing</number>
            </form>

   An suggestions regarding the best was to handle verb stems would be
most welcome.

                            Thanks,

                            Eric
