(1) Zamenhof. He specifically wrote that the ending -AS does not mean the
same as ESTAS (and ditto for the other endings), though with the caveat
that "maybe someday it would". See "Lingvaj Respondoj".
 
(2) The internal logic of Esperanto. Auld quotes Grabowski as the first to
point out that Xas is "AS Xe" rather than "ESTAS Xa". (This first
expression may not make sense to most West Europeans, but once you
understand (a) the meanings of the various morphemes, and (b) the fact that
in Esperanto they can _all_ be used independently, it makes a lot of sense.)
