Throughout the discussion on how to sedate PEDS for CT scans, all ages of
children, seemingly, under 4 have been targeted. I was disappointed to find
that no one mentioned the use of a Child Life Specialist in the ED in order
to help children (and parents) remain calm thoughout not only the CT, but
the circumstances surrounding the need for one. By using a Child Life
Specialist (a specially trained member of the medical team who coaches
children and families through the hospital experience--beginning to end) the
need for sedation may be able to be reduced or abolished.
